We take our hands for granted until we run into a problem. This can be an injury and hand injuries are surprisingly common, one research study suggests that 25% of injuries seen in Accident and Emergency departments are hand injuries.
While many injuries heal remarkably well with minimal intervention some injuries can result in permanent disability if not treated appropriately.
The hand can also be subject to many disease processes such as arthritis, nerve compression such as carpal tunnel syndrome or tendon and inflammatory problems along with some common conditions such as Dupuytren’s disease.
The appropriate treatment may simply be advice, physiotherapy and splintage or medical treatment while some conditions are likely to require an operation.
